There are some common misconceptions about Wills. People believe that if they were to die without writing one, then everything would transfer directly to a spouse. This is actually not true. Similarly, unmarried couples living together assume that their partner would inherit their estate as a 'common law' partner. Again, this is not true.

Make One, and Keep It Updated
Making a Will, therefore, is a sensible thing to do for anyone over 18 and absolutely essential for anyone with dependants, as it ensures that your Estate then goes to the specified beneficiary or beneficiaries that you wish to inherit and not otherwise. It is also very important to regularly update a Will, perhaps as often as once a year after every budget or after any major life event such as marriage, divorce or having children.
